Applications for the 2026 cohort are now closed, and the two teams have been selected. Meet the 2026 cohort. The requirements below remain here for reference for future cohorts.
What we need to see.
Every item below is a hard filter. We do not make exceptions for these. If your team fits all of them, apply.
- Team size of 2 to 9, with 3 to 5 ideal. No solo developers.
- At least six months of shared work history. You have already built something together.
- A playable vertical slice. Not a concept document, not a prototype. A build that represents the core loop.
- An established web presence. Itch.io page, dev blog, or active social channels.
- Ages 18+ Current or recent graduates within the past year. Specific eligibility is confirmed during finalist review.
- Able to attend required in-person events in Santa Cruz during July through September. Travel is the team's responsibility.
Over $5,000 in value per team.
The cohort is small so the attention is direct.
- Direct funding paid in monthly installments.
- Matched ad spend, walked through best practices with mentors
- Mentor hours from working developers, marketers, producers, and publishers.
- Playtesting and feedback on regular builds througoout the process.
- Feedback on your pitch deck, store page, and trailer.
- Continued check-ins for six months after the program.
What we expect from you
- Attend at least 85% of the content during the incubator. Can be shared across multiple team members.
- Weekly check-ins during the three months. Monthly check-ins for one year after.
- A publicly playable demo by the end of September. Released free.
- Submission to a student game festival or competition during the program. The program covers the submission fee.
- At least two of your own social channels, posting weekly throughout the program.
- Credit for the incubator on your Steam page and marketing materials during the program.
On terms. Financial structure, repayment, and the full agreement are shared with finalists before signing. Retora does not take IP, equity, exclusivity, or publishing rights. If your game makes no money, nothing is owed.
